Havana party chief fired for "errors"

Havana party chief fired for "errors"

Ordaz2_3 Iván Antonio Ordaz Curbelo, first secretary of the Communist
Party for Havana province, was removed from his post Sunday, during a
meeting of the party's provincial committee, the daily Granma disclosed
Monday. The explanation — given in a single paragraph at the end of an
article on food production in the province — was that Ordaz was fired
"for committing errors and indisciplines incompatible with his
responsibilities." He was replaced by Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento,
deputy chief of the Department of Industry and Construction of the
Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. A member of the
Central Committee of the Communist Party and a National Assembly deputy
for the city of Artemisa, Ordaz had headed the political-ideological
branch of the Provincial Buro until 2004, when he was appointed party
chief for the province. As a not-so-subtle reminder of the swiftness of
party removals and appointments, Ulises_2 Granma published a picture of
the new party secretary seated at Sunday's meeting next to José Ramón
Machado Ventura, Cuba's First Vice President. Elsewhere in the article,
Granma mentioned the need to continue "the struggle against corruption,
crime and the manifestations of social indiscipline." To read the
article (in Spanish only), click here.
